- MRI Scans — Best for brain, soft tissue, and organ models
- 4D Ultrasound — Required for fetal keepsake models
- CBCT — Cone-beam CT for dental and jaw models
Accepted File Formats
- DICOM (.dcm) — Standard medical imaging format from CT and MRI scanners
- NIfTI (.nii, .nii.gz) — Neuroimaging format commonly used in research
- Volume files (.vol, .mvl) — GE Voluson ultrasound format for fetal scans
- STL / OBJ — If you already have a 3D model, we can print directly
Getting Your Files from a Hospital
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), you have the right to request a copy of your medical imaging data.
Ask your hospital, clinic, or radiologist for your scan files on a CD/DVD or via digital transfer. Most facilities provide DICOM files at no extra charge.
Tip: Request the full DICOM dataset, not just the radiology report or summary images.
Tips for Best Results
- Thin slices — CT scans with ≤1mm slice thickness produce the best detail
- Full dataset — Send all slices, not just selected images
- Fetal scans — 28–34 weeks gives the best facial detail for keepsakes
- Not sure? — Send what you have and we'll assess it for free
